Alveda King Keeping the Dream Alive for All Americans - Even the Unborn

This past week I heard Alveda King on the radio talking about her uncle’s dream and insisting that Martin Luther King Jr. was pro-life in every sense of the term. She strongly believes in the dream and is working to bring the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to all American citizens, even the unborn. It is one thing for me as a man to speak against abortion, but it is quite another thing for a woman, who has had an abortion to tell us what she thinks about it. I am praying and hoping that more and more Americans, especially women, will listen to her and to other women, who know first-hand what abortion is. Alveda is not alone. She is merely one of a growing number of African women who truly believe that some of the abortion movement has been to eliminate the progeny of African Americans. Wow! That’s quite a claim! We live in interesting days. Our political moorings are crumbling and so we may see in the near future blue dogs in the Democratic Party do more to curb abortion than the waffling duffers of the grand old Republican party that recently had a soul and cried out on behalf of the unborn. But even more so, have we not learned over the years, that it is the person who has suffered through a travesty, who can speak to it and call for its abolition with a knowledge and passion that the rest of us cannot muster. I believe in a woman’s choice and I am presently listening to women who have chosen to speak candidly about their past abortions. Why not join me and start by listening to Alveda on youtube?

What is the Gospel? (we need all the resources we can get these days)

If you go to monergism.com you will find a rich source of free literature on a multitude of topics including the Gospel. This past week I had the privilege of visiting with a friend who was despairing. I listened to him for a good long time, prayed with him, read several Psalms to him. In our second hour together, he said, “I am told that you could read to me some Bible verses that would show me how I can put my faith in Jesus and be assured of God’s love.” I took him through a whirlwind tour of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, selecting several key verses. He tracked with me all along the way. At Romans 10 after I read, “if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved,” he said, “And you are going to help me do that right now.” Nothing replaces a working knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, but reading literature about the Gospel from people who are searching and applying the Scripture can be a fine aid. Every once in awhile, I meet someone who is ready to read extensively and enter into a conversation about the Gospel and its ramifications for life. I recommend the free files at monergism.

New Years Day 2009 Reflection on Y2K, the Age of Aquarius

New Years Day is not only a proper time to look ahead but it is also a good time to reflect on the past. Do you remember the Y2K scare of 1999? How about all of the hype about harmonic convergence and the Age of Aquarius dawning as our scientific, if not arbitrary measurement of time turned to a new millennium? As January 1, 2000 neared gun sales sky-rocketed just as they have in the final days of 2008 with news of economic crisis. Fredrick Kunkle opened his October 27, 2008 article in the Washington Post with these words: “Americans have cut back on buying cars, furniture and clothes in a tough economy, but there’s one consumer item that’s still enjoying healthy sales: guns. Purchases of firearms and ammunition have risen 8 to 10 percent this year, according to state and federal data.” Of course, gun sales have also risen this year directly following Obama’s election to the Presidency, many citizens fearing his views on gun control. My neighbors stocked cigarettes, toilet paper, canned and dried food, and ammunition, advised by trusted leaders to prepare for the Crash. Continue reading »
