The Fullness of God’s Grace
I Corinthians 1:1-9
As far as we can see through Paul’s letters, the Church at Corinth was messier and broken than most. None of the first century churches were perfect. Each one suffered from relational conflict. Each one was in danger of heresies and wolves in sheep’s clothing. Paul did not go to trouble-free zones to plant churches. Instead he went to the crossroads of the Roman Empire where the needs and opportunities increased. Paul instructed Titus, one of his church planters, to establish a church on the island of Crete, notorious for dishonesty, indulgence, and discord. Nevertheless, the Church at Corinth wins the prize for being the more troubled and twisted of the churches listed in the New Testament. Continue reading »

sad day for democracy- Benazir Bhutto Assasinated

join me in prayer for the people of Pakistan and for democracy through out the world. this is a sad, sad day. a beautiful leader has fallen. postscript: Mindy Belz of World Magazine has written a beautiful tribute to Benazir Bhutto in the recent, January 12 issue, titled “Assassination of a Dream.”

“Your Heart at Advent”
Luke 1:5-38

When the angel told Zechariah’s that his wife, Elizabeth would give birth to a son, even though she was barren in her old age, Zechariah said, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” For this response God disciplined him by making him mute until the son was born. The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would give birth to a son and Mary responded, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” The language of her response is virtually identical to the response of Zechariah. How is it that God punishes Zechariah but blesses Mary? Continue reading »
