Marilyn Manson and the Image of God

I have been teaching a workshop at RYM camp, helping teens listen to popular music, analyzing the worldviews of the songwriters. Overwhelmingly, the alternative rock and folk music of the past decade has presented humanity as vile and broken. The biblical doctrine of the total depravity of humanity has little to no correction to the views presented in the music of Limp Bizkit, Stain’d, Cake, Brett Dennen, Steven Sufjan, and U2. The humanism of the modern era is dead.
The Christian/biblical view of humanity is founded on two pillars: 1) God made man, male and female in his own image; 2) Humanity fell into sin and death and is irreparable apart from divine and gracious work. Any Christian seeking to present the gospel to the prevailing worldviews of our present culture must emphasize that humanity is made in God’s image.
I asked the students to shout out the names of the most vile people. Quite a few names were shouted including Marilyn Manson. I asked the campers to raise their hands if they believed that Marilyn Manson was made in God’s image. Continue reading »

Reformed Youth Movement - Summer Camp 2007 Pacific Northwest

56 teens learning the doctrines of Justification and Sanctification, braving the ropes course, and laughing at, then discussing “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” is dominating the Reformed Youth Movement Summer Camp 2007 in the Pacific Northwest. There’s more: The teen band leading worship music - singing psalms and hymns set to new tunes - teens worshipping a holy and gracious God. Michael Subracko preaching on our identity in Christ and God’s promises made good to us in Christ is shaping these teens to live confidently and productively to the glory of God. Continue reading »

Captive Audience: The Prisoner

I opened my snail mail to read a four-page hand-written letter from Terry, a prisoner in a state prison, requesting that I correspond with him for the final three years of his 33 year sentence. He’s thinking now about getting out and he needs real contacts, undoubtedly. He may even need to show the parole board some proof of connections, or perhaps, he has attended a class on what to do to prepare to get out of prison after rotting for 22 years. The reason he offers for contacting me, a stranger, after all these years in prison is that he recently has professed faith in Christ Jesus. Continue reading »

On the Streets of Memphis

Last night in Memphis, at the opening of the 34th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America, the host speech, included a lengthy warning to be careful downtown at night due to panhandling and crime. The speaker informed us that since Katrina hit New Orleans, a steady stream of homeless people have departed New Orleans, arriving in Memphis. We were told not to give any attention to the poor on the streets. Before I entered my hotel last night, saying goodnight to several brothers, a homeless Irish man, Sean, approached asking me for some money. I told him that I was unable to give him cash, but that at 7 AM I would be meeting my first cousin and brother Stephen for breakfast in the hotel. I invited him to join us and he promised me that he would do so. Continue reading »
