The Bible: not your typical book of religion
In preparation to teach a group of teens a course on worldviews, I discovered Albert Wolters in his book, “Creation Regained,” citing Leslie Newbigin, missionary to India: “Leslie Newbigin tells the story of a learned Hindu scholar who once complained that Christians have misrepresented the Bible: ‘I can’t understand why you missionaries present the Bible to us in India as a book of religion. It is not a book of religion - and anyway we have plenty of books of religion in India. We don’t need any more!
I find your Bible a unique interpretation of universal history, the history of the whole creation and the history of the human race. And therefore a unique interpretation of the human person as a responsible actor in history. That is unique. There is nothing else in the whole religious literature of the world to put alongside of it.’”
For redemptive historical preachers like myself - this is music to my ears!
Check out my summary of the history of redemptive under “Gospel” on this blog. This summary will help to support what this Hindu discovered about the Bible.
