The Dog Whisperer - Cesar Millan

-a pet topic of nathan e. lewis.

(The most famous of all dog trainers, Cesar Millan, the dog trainer of Oprah Winfrey, and creator of the successful Dog Whisperer Show on the National Geographic Channel has been interviewed by Cathy Newman in the National Geographic, December 2006 issue. -excerpts follow!)

Cesar Millan: We humanize dogs. We hold conversations with them as if they were people. We use dogs for our own emotional yearnings. A dog doesn’t know it lives in Beverly Hills or how mch we spend on it. In Mexico, Petco would never make the same amount of money. I use a 35-cent leash - a piece of cord. It’s all about us. Luke Powell photographs “the enemy”

Kim Alphandary painted “The Holy Family’s Escape Into Egypt,” using Luke Powell’s photograph of an Aghani family, the mother on a donkey with a child hidden at her breast. Her title for the painting is simply “Mary and Joseph,” (you can view it at analogizing.blogspot.com.) Kim told me that I should check out Luke’s web site. She considers Luke to be one of the best photographers she has ever discovered. I have been visiting www.lukepowell.com and have been moved by Luke’s photography, especially of the people, the children, of Afghanistan. This past week I contacted Luke and he sent to me the following excerpt from an essay he has published, explaining his work.

“god in a box”

Blaise Paschal (1623-1662), a French scientist and religious philosopher, wrote his “Pensees,” fragments, if not little gems presenting his view of the world. His thoughts trace the universal search for God as he cuts across doctrine and into the very heart of the moral problem. When I am tired or distracted, Paschal’s terse sentences can re-start my thinking. He wrote, “Two extremes: to exclude reason, to admit reason only.” Continue reading »
