“The Covenant: Innocent until Proven Guilty�
Deuteronomy 19:15-21

Under these laws, may a person be convicted of a crime on the reliable testimony of one witness?
In what ways is our present judicial system based upon God’s law recorded here by Moses?

What are you thoughts and convictions concerning punishments fitting the crime? Do you think that ‘life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth…” is just or barbaric?

What this text have to do with the gospel? How would you place this text in the history of redemption? How is it connected to the life of Jesus?

July 9
“The Covenant: Rules of War�
Deuteronomy 20

How do we know that we are fighting a war God has directed us to fight?

What are the four reasons to excuse a man from fighting in a war of Israel? (5-8)
Do you think that these are good reasons? why or why not? Which one reason is usually lifted out of the text and mentioned?

What is significant in (11-12) to our understanding of war from the perspective of God’s law?

Why are the listed nations in a different category than other nations? Why should they be destroyed? (18: 9-14) (20:18)

Have you ever read or studied (19-20) ? How should this inform our views and practices concerning preservation of the environment?

What does war have to do with the gospel?
Why would a loving God command his people to declare war against other nations?

Deuteronomy 21

Why do you think that the elders of the nearest town must take responsibility for the slain person? (1-4)
What does “atonement” mean? (5-9)
What would usually happen to a woman captured in ancient near eastern warfare? (10-14)
What provisions/protections does the law of God extend to captured women? (10-14)
Does the law of God condone bigamy? (15-17)
What is the intent of these laws of the firstborn?
How are we to receive and apply these laws of God concerning the rebellious son? (18-21)
(remember to put yourself, not only in the parents’ and elders’ position, but also take the place of the rebellious son…)
What do you think is the historical and visual context of these laws of hanging people on trees? (22-23)
What do any of these laws have to do with the gospel?

How do we apply these laws to our lives? How do we go about the extraction of principles?
What do these laws recorded in (13-30) protect and promote?
What is remarkable about the rape laws?
How does (28-29) inform our ideas and practices concerning pre-marital sex?
What do these various laws have to do with the gospel?

    They are to remember two things from their wilderness wanderings:
    1. The Lord’s sustenance - all bread comes from His hand.
    2. Their need for the Lord’s discipline - they are a weak and sinful people, prone to disobedience.

    After coming into the promised land and becoming wealthy, Moses forsees their tendency to forget these, thinking that they are the source of their wealth and that they are immune to sin and judgment.

    that’s correct, tim. the law would be operative in the promised land continually reminding the people that they live with god, wholly dependent upon him and subject to his will. this is the life of true freedom.
